Hybrid Power Systems

Integrating Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage, and Thermal Generation for Frontier Markets

Most operators in remote and off-grid environments rely entirely on diesel or HFO generation. Fuel is expensive to transport, supply chains are fragile, and the pressure to reduce emissions is increasing.

The answer is not to abandon thermal generation. It is to integrate smarter. Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and existing or new thermal assets, engineered as a coordinated system, reduce fuel consumption, cut emissions, and improve reliability without sacrificing the uptime your operations demand.

USP&E engineers, builds, and operates hybrid power systems from feasibility through to long-term O&M. We bring the EPC capability, the equipment access, the frontier experience, and the engineering depth to make it work.

What we Deliver

USP&E provides full-scope EPC and O&M for hybrid power systems that combine solar PV, BESS, and thermal generation. We act as the single point of technical accountability across the full project lifecycle.

Feasibility and Engineering Design

We conduct site assessments, load studies, and environmental reviews before a line is drawn. Our engineering design packages include process flow diagrams, single-line electrical diagrams, 3D models, P&IDs, civil infrastructure designs, and SCADA integration specifications. Every design is peer-reviewed by qualified engineers before it moves to execution.

Solar PV

We design, procure, and install containerised and fixed solar PV systems scaled to your site requirements. Modular configuration means systems can be deployed incrementally and expanded as demand grows, even in the most logistically constrained environments.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

USP&E is a channel partner for Huawei Energy, supplying utility-grade containerised BESS solutions for large-scale industrial applications. These systems integrate high-performance lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery clusters with intelligent power conversion systems, power distribution units, temperature management, and integrated safety systems. They are designed to store energy during periods of surplus, dispatch at peak demand, and provide grid stabilisation across hybrid configurations.

Thermal Generation Integration

We source, procure, and integrate new, used, or surplus thermal assets from all major OEMs. As a channel partner for Wabtec, alongside our established relationships with Wärtsilä, MAN, Caterpillar, Hyundai HiMSEN, GE, and Siemens, we have direct access to a broad range of thermal generation technology suited to hybrid configurations.

Construction, Commissioning, and QA

We execute with in-house construction oversight and local teams. Our quality assurance process covers material traceability, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, and final commissioning sign-off. If it leaves our team, it meets the specification.

SCADA and SmartPower Integration

Every hybrid system we deliver embeds SmartPower connectivity, linking live plant data to remote monitoring, performance analytics, and predictive maintenance alerts from day one of operation.

Long-Term O&M

We do not build and leave. USP&E provides ongoing Operations and Maintenance support, managing spare parts, optimising dispatch logic, and extending asset life across the full operational period.

Why USP&E

Utility scale power generation in fronteir markets

We operate where others do not

USP&E has delivered power infrastructure across Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Remote mine sites, conflict-affected regions, extreme climates, and constrained supply chains are not unusual conditions for us. They are where we have built our track record.

We take full technical accountability

On every project, USP&E acts as the single point of responsibility from engineering through commissioning. One team, one standard, and no gaps between contractors. If it is within our scope, we own it.

Powering Delivery

We integrate thermal and renewable without compromise

Hybrid design requires deep knowledge of both thermal systems and renewable technology. Our in-house mechanical, electrical, civil, and software engineers design systems that balance solar generation, BESS dispatch, and thermal backup to optimise cost, emissions, and reliability for the specific site and load profile. We engineer for the conditions, not a standard template.

Proof from the Field

In Madagascar, USP&E was appointed EPC contractor for the thermal component of the Molo Graphite Mine hybrid power plant for NextSource Materials and Cross Boundary Energy. The project required integration of thermal generation with solar PV and battery energy storage at a site 160 km from the nearest town, with limited grid access. The system was delivered on time and on budget. The hybrid power plant is projected to reduce CO2 emissions by over 11,300 tonnes per year.

In the United States, USP&E provides ongoing O&M support for renewable energy facilities in Bay Minette and Rockwood, demonstrating our operational capability across the full renewable asset lifecycle.

Anglo Belgian Corporation, one of our long-standing technical partners, confirms USP&E’s track record across “EPC and O&M solutions” in the “hybrid thermal and renewable energy space.”
