Power Engineering Formulas: The Essential Reference Table

A handful of power engineering formulas carry most of the weight in power station design, analysis, and operation. They sit behind every load study, heat balance, and water treatment decision on site. The table below collects the ones our engineers reach for first, from basic electrical relationships through thermal efficiency to cooling tower water balance.

Power Engineering Formulas Quick Reference

Calculation Power Engineering Formulas What It Tells You
Ohm’s Law V = I x R Voltage, current, resistance relationship
Single phase real power P = V x I x cosθ Real power in watts, cosθ is power factor
Three phase real power P = 1.732 x V x I x cosθ Real power from line voltage and current
Apparent power kVA = kW / power factor Alternator and cable sizing basis
Efficiency η = Output Power / Input Power x 100 Conversion efficiency, percent
Heat rate HR = Input Energy / Output Power Fuel energy per kWh, usually Btu/kWh
Cooling tower water balance M = E + D + W Make up, evaporation, draw off, windage
Cycles of concentration Cycles = XC / XM = M / (M – E) Dissolved solids build up in circulating water
Evaporation, heat balance E = C x ΔT x cp / HV From circulation rate and cooling range
Evaporation, rule of thumb E = 0.001 x C x ΔT Roughly 1 percent of circulation per 10F of range
Windage loss, induced draft 0.1 to 0.3 percent of C Drift loss before eliminators are fitted

Reading the Electrical Set

Note the power factor term. Real power in an AC system is never simply voltage times current unless the load is purely resistive. Omitting cosθ overstates output on any motor driven site, which is how generators end up undersized. The three phase constant 1.732 is the square root of three, applied when V and I are line values rather than phase values. Heat rate is the number that matters commercially: at a given fuel price it converts directly into cost per kWh, and it is how natural gas turbines and HFO generating sets are honestly compared.

Reading the Cooling Tower Set

Because evaporated water carries no salts, a chloride balance gives cycles of concentration directly. Higher cycles mean less make up water but more aggressive chemistry. Refinery and power plant towers typically run between three and seven cycles.

Two evaporation rules of thumb circulate in the industry, one using a 0.0008 factor and one using 0.001. On 2,400 gallons per minute at a 10F range they return 19.2 and 24 gallons per minute, a 25 percent spread. Use the heat balance for design and treat either shortcut as a check only.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate three phase power?

Multiply 1.732 by line voltage, line current, and the power factor. For 400 V at 100 A and 0.8 power factor, real power is 55.4 kW.

What is heat rate?

Heat rate is fuel energy input divided by electrical output, normally expressed in Btu/kWh. Lower heat rate means less fuel per kWh.

How much water does a cooling tower evaporate?

Approximately 1 percent of the circulation rate for every 10F of cooling range. Confirm against a heat balance before sizing make up supply.
